Black Bear with Cubs
|
Extirpated from southern New England in the mid 1800's, the black bear has made a steady comeback. Each year, their habitat spreads further south into Connecticut and New York. Numerous black bear have been sighted in Fairfield and Westchester counties. Although still somewhat elusive, black bear encounters are becoming more common among hikers, dog walkers, and even people looking out their backdoor windows! There have been frequent reports of bears pillaging backyard bird feeders in broad daylight.Bear weight ranges from 150 to 450 pounds. They prefer deciduous and conifers forests with abundant ground vegetation as well as mature trees that provide nuts for autumn feeding. Bears are omnivorous, eating everything from fish, plants, fruits, nuts, berries, insects, and other mammals.Female mothers, usually have a home range of 5 -- 7 square miles, while male range from 12 -- 60 miles. For the most part, bears are solitary and keep their distance from humans. However, they have a keen sense of smell and are attracted to the aroma of human food and cooking. A black bear may venture too close for comfort if food is left in garbage cans, inside a car, outside on a barbecue, or especially in a tent!Although there are some dangerous associated with an animal as large and powerful as a black bear, do not allow hysteria to cloud your appreciation for one of southern New England's most majestic species.
